I’m not telling you that the methods I’d be stating you would differentiate you from the crowd or help you be outstanding. I’d say one thing, “The one thing you should do for people to accept you is to accept yourself first”.
The face is an important part of our life because we have to face a huge world that is out there, beyond your entrance gate. Therefore, you need to look confident.
Oily face is surely a problem. While there ae many face wash available, how about trying some of the home remedies to get rid of oily skin and be you.
Oily skin is caused by over-active glands that produce too much sebum. Too much oil on the face can also be due to hormonal changes, medication side effects, genetics and stress.
In the right amounts, natural oils keep skin looking healthy and youthful, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. As a matter of fact, Oily skin tends to age better and develop fewer wrinkles than the dry or normal skin; so you see having oily skin is not so bad. However, excess oil accumulated on the outer layer of the skin may lead to the development of blackheads, whiteheads, pimples and skin irritation.
So, let’s take a look at some of the methods to get an oil free face.
1. Yoghurt
Yoghurt is considered one of the most popular home remedies for oily face due to the presence of a lactic acid which can aid in exfoliating the skin.
Apply 1 tbsp. of plain yoghurt on your face and let it stay for 15 minutes and then wash it with cool water. Do this process once a day. Another option is applying the mixture of organic yoghurt and some ground oatmeal and1 tsp. of warm honey on the face. Let it stand for 10-15 minutes and wash with warm water afterwards. It can be very effective way of getting an oil free face.
2. Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple Cider Vinegar or ACV is here again for your rescue. Apple cider vinegar can be great in exfoliating the skin.
Applying apple cider vinegar is best before going to bed. Let it stand for 5-10 minutes, then wash with cool water. To see good results, repeat this remedy for at least 3 weeks. If you have sensitive skin, add a half cup of water into the apple cider vinegar. During summer, you can freeze the vinegar into ice cubes, and then apply it to your face. Soothing isn’t it.

3. Tomatoes
Well, you must be aware of the fact that tomatoes are rich in vitamin C (helpful for skin that has acne problems). Tomatoes are effective in reducing oiliness due to its astringent compounds. Naturally, tomatoes have oil-absorbing acids, which can remove excessive oil.
Cut the tomato and rub it on the face. Allow the tomato juice to stand on your skin for 15 minutes and then wash your face with cold water. Pat dry and apply some moisturiser. For best results, you can also add some honey to tomato juice for sweet results.
4. Egg White
Egg whites have vitamin A, which can effectively dry and tighten the skin, that means, you can have an oil free face. Egg white masks are said to firm the skin and soak up oil.
Add one teaspoon of honey along with an egg white and stir well. Then add just enough flour to make a paste (Remember you don’t have to eat it, but use it as a facial mask). Apply the mask to your face, avoiding the eye area. Let it dry for about ten minutes, then wash it off with warm water. Another alternative is to whip one egg white and add lemon. Apply the mixture on the face and let it stand for 15 minutes, then wash with warm water.
5. Aloe Vera
Aloe Vera is quite helpful in absorbing excessive oil from the surface of the skin. You’ll require the Aloe Vera gel for your treatment and you can extract that by cutting in the middle the aloe Vera leaf.
Apply the aloe gel on the face. Let the gel dry on the skin. Repeat the process for at least 2-3 times per day. You may also boil the leaf for a couple of minutes and add some honey to create a paste. Let it stand in the face for 20 minutes and wash with cold water.
6. Lemon Juice
Another great home remedy for an oily face is lemon juice. It has citric acid, which works as an astringent for the face, just like the tomato, and also has antiseptic substance, which lightens the skin.
Mix 1 tsp. of fresh lemon juice with ½ tsp. of distilled water. Dip a cotton ball in the mixture and apply it to your face. Let it stand for 10 minutes and rinse with warm water. Lemon juice can dry facial skin, so use some moisturiser after rinsing. You can replace water with cucumber juice.
So, who needs face wash with lemon in it, when you use lemon directly as a face wash.
7. Apple
Apples are rich in fibre, vitamin C, and alpha hydroxy acids (AHA) which tone, soften, and moisturise the skin.
Peel off apple & cut it into small pieces. Rub these apple pieces on your face. After one hour clean your face with cold water. This should make your skin oil-free & glowing.
Alternatively, smash the apple until you have a ½ cup (Don’t forget to de-seed it). Combine ½ mashed apple with the ½ cup of cooked oatmeal, 1 egg white and 1 tbsp. of lemon juice. Mix well the ingredients to create a paste. Apply the paste to your face for about 15 minutes, and then wash your face with cool water.
8. Milk
It would definitely not make your skin white, but it can be an excellent home remedy for oily skin, especially for people with sensitive skin. Milk is a good cleanser and your skin will look smooth and supple after applying milk.
Add 2-3 drops of lavender oil to 2 tbsp. of milk. Dab a cotton ball in the mixture and apply it to your face. Gently massage the skin for several minutes to boost blood circulation. This is best when done before bedtime. Let it stay overnight. Rinse in the morning with cold water. Watch the effect!
9. Cornstarch
Cornstarch dries up excess oil, leaving skin soft and clear.
Make a paste of cornstarch in warm water. Use 2-3 tablespoon of cornstarch. Apply on your face and leave it until it gets dry. Rinse with lukewarm water. Repeat daily for good results.
10. Orange
If you don’t have an apple at your place, you may as well use orange as a remedy for oily skin. Orange peel contains astringents, which help to control oil secretion.
Dry some orange peel in the sun. Make fine powder out of it. Mix the powder with rosewater to make a paste and use it as the mask. Apply onto your face and leave it for 10-15 minutes. Rinse with water. Repeat regularly to control oil and prevent blemishes.
11. Cucumbers
How can you forget cucumber when it comes to the skin, especially your face! Cucumbers have soothing and cooling properties, which is beneficial for oily skin. It is a good source of vitamins and minerals, including vitamin E, vitamin A, potassium and magnesium, which are good for oily skin.
Cut fresh slices of cucumbers and put them on your face. For best result, let it stay overnight and wash with warm water the next morning. Alternatively, make a mixture of cucumber juice and lime juice and apply it on the face and hands. This remedy can also be used to lighten freckles and reduce sunburn.
12. Clay Mask
Clay masks help to reduce the oily appearance and tone your skin by drawing out impurities from your face. You can easily make your own clay mask using facial clay, be careful not use the clay used in pottery, you won’t want your skin to crack.
Blend your facial clay with witch hazel and add two drops of lemon. Add some cypress oil as well and rinse off the mask after 10 minutes. You can also use Fuller’s Earth powder or clay. Quite effective.
Tips for smooth and glowing skin:
- Drink plenty of water to hydrate, refresh, and detoxify skin from the inside.
- As a disinfectant and a natural drying agent, salt is one of the most effective ways to remove excess oil.
- Wash your face with hot water. It dissolves oil more effectively than cool or lukewarm water.
- Hyssop, a member of the mint family makes an excellent herbal toner. In folk medicine, it’s considered well for the complexion. Add 1 tablespoon hyssop to 1 cup water. Boil for ten minutes, then strain. Let the mixture cool. After cleansing your skin, apply the toner with a cotton ball.
- A fine-grain powder can help absorb oil and get rid of dead skin cells that clog pores. Grind and sift 2 teaspoons of dry oats, then moisten with some witch hazel to form a paste. Using your fingertips, massage this paste gently into your skin, then rinse it away with warm water.
- Remove all make-up before hitting the bed (Definitely not for men).
- Add lots of leafy vegetables and fruits in your daily diet.
- Avoid taking the stress.
You see your home itself is a storehouse to remedies to many day-to-day problems and some diseases. I’m not telling you to neglect the medicine and the modern day solutions, but all I want you to start looking the solution that’s beside you apart from searching for it all over the world.
The remedies mentioned above would not only get you an oil free skin but can also give you a glowing skin (it’s certain in some cases). Apart from that, it can also help you in getting rid of acne and marks that may the result of the previous acne and provide other additional benefits.
