“Motherhood has a very humanising effect. Everything gets reduce to essentials.”
It is truly said, “Motherhood is the greatest thing and the hardest thing.”
Only a woman has been given the gift of reproducing the liked ones. That is why they need to be careful during their days of pregnancy, be it the lifestyle they used to have or the food they used about eat. They need to be cautious about everything they do and eat.
Now the question arises, why is there so much so the restriction on food during the period of pregnancy?
You will always find people telling pregnant women what to eat during pregnancy, what not to eat while pregnant.
They say because they know. But what do they know?
Let me ask you a very simple question.
How to most of the women get to know they are pregnant.
Yes, apart from the present day pregnancy test, most of the women started experiencing nausea resulting in vomiting. So why does that happen?
It happens due to the hormonal change occurs in the body of women due to the formation of a new life inside her which wants her to be careful.
Now let’s come to the topic that we’ll be looking at.
Foods to avoid in pregnancy:
1. Seafood with mercury
Seafood is a rich source of protein but seafood that contain high levels of mercury should be avoided. Mercury consumed during pregnancy has been linked to developmental delays and brain damage.
The bigger and older the fish, the more mercury it's likely to contain. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) encourage pregnant women to avoid:
- Swordfish
- Shark
- King mackerel
- Tilefish
You can eat fishes like
- Shrimp
- Salmon
- Pollock
- Catfish
- Anchovies
- Trout
Certain types of fish used in sushi should also be avoided due to high levels of mercury. Also, avoid raw or undercooked fish or shellfish as well as cold-smoked or pickled fish.
2. Unpasteurized (raw) milk and juices
Milk and fresh juice can be very healthy during the pregnancy period.
But you should avoid raw unpasteurized milk and juices. The main concern is listeriosis, a bacterial infection that can be very dangerous to your baby. You're especially at risk during pregnancy because your immune system is suppressed.
The bacterium Listeria monocytogenes can lurk in unpasteurized milk and dairy products, unpasteurized juice, and other foods, and it can continue to grow, even in the refrigerator.
Listeria has the ability to cross the placenta and may infect the baby, which could lead to infection or blood poisoning and may be life-threatening for you as well as for the new life. So it is better to avoid this food along with soft cheese.
3. Raw or Partially Cooked Eggs
Eggs are a good source of protein, vitamins and minerals, so if you want to eat eggs during your pregnancy, just make sure that they are properly cooked.
Pregnant women must avoid eating raw or partially cooked eggs. They pose a huge risk for salmonella infection, which can cause vomiting and diarrhoea. This, in turn, affects the baby’s health.
In addition, avoid foods made with raw or partially cooked eggs, such as homemade mayonnaise, Caesar salad dressing and others.
4. Raw or Undercooked Meat
Uncooked or undercooked meat should be avoided due to the risk of contamination with coliform bacteria, toxoplasmosis (an infection caused by a parasite that can harm the unborn baby), and salmonella.
Avoid refrigerated pates and meat spreads too.
5. Caffeine
According to studies, caffeine intake may relate to miscarriages. Avoid caffeine during the first trimester (3 months) to reduce the likelihood of a miscarriage.
Caffeine is a diuretic, which means it helps eliminate fluids from the body. It can result in water and calcium loss.
Large amounts of caffeine are associated with miscarriage, premature birth, low birth weight, and withdrawal symptoms in infants.
Apart from coffee, also avoid other sources of caffeine like herbal teas, green tea, energy drinks, soft drinks, dark chocolate and others.
6. Raw Sprouts
Raw sprouts are usually a healthy snack, but during pregnancy, it’s definitely not.
Sprouts may contain harmful bacteria, such as salmonella, listeria and E. coli that can cause food poisoning. Vomiting and diarrhoea due to food poisoning are hard on your body as well as your unborn baby.
This doesn’t mean that women cannot eat sprouts at all during pregnancy. Raw sprouts can be harmful. So just cook it properly and enjoy it.
Also avoid eating unwashed or bruise fruit or vegetables, as bacteria has a great chance to thrive in such cases.
7. Frozen meals
Frozen pizzas, diet meals, and especially Asian-inspired convenience meals can pack up to 20 g of sugar per serving. If a meal has more than 10 g of sugar per serving, skip it.
8. Pate
For those, who don’t know what pate is; it is a mixture of cooked ground meat and fat minced into a spreadable paste. Common additions include vegetables, herbs, spices, and either wine or brandy. In simple language, it can be known as meat spread.
Refrigerated pate or meat spreads should be avoided because they may contain the bacteria listeria. The consequence of which has already been discussed above. Canned pate or shelf-safe meat spreads can be eaten.
9. Fruits
No, I’m not telling you that stop eating every fruit. Fruits are very good for pregnant women, but to tell you the truth, there are some fruits that can be dangerous for the women as well as for the life in her.
So, which are the fruit pregnant women should never include in their diet?
Unripe or semi-ripe Papaya
Unripe (green) papaya contains a latex substance that can trigger uterine contractions. The latex found in unripe papaya acts like the hormones oxytocin and prostaglandin, which are involved in the start of labour. Therefore, it may lead to miscarriage.
Avoid unripe or semi-ripe papaya, however, ripe papaya can be very healthy for pregnant women.
Pineapple
Pineapples are rich in bromelain which can cause softening of the cervix leading to early labour. So, avoid pineapple and pineapple juice.
10. Alcohol
I’ve been saying this again and again that alcohol is very bad for health. It has the least significance of anything.
In the case of pregnancy, it can be worst for the women as well as the new life.
There is NO amount of alcohol that is known to be safe during pregnancy, and therefore alcohol should be avoided during pregnancy.
I’d suggest everyone quit alcohol. It’s useless.
For women having the habit of drinking alcohol for any reason, it’s the best time quit because a good mother has good habits that the children will be learning from her.
Apart from that, Alcohol significantly increases the risk for fetal alcohol syndrome, developmental disorders and miscarriages.
One of the dangerous food that should be avoided at all cost during pregnancy according to Dr Ted Broer.
Soy Products
Soy can cause hormonal imbalance and damage the pancreas and cause an increase in diabetes.
This is not it.
Read further to know the entire scenario.
During pregnancy, an infant girl and an infant boy have different types of brains; obviously, a little boy has different DNA than a little girl.
In the first few months of life, little boys undergo a testosterone surge. This is the hormone surge that allows proper secondary sex characteristics in men. When pregnant women eat soy products, the little boy’s body is filled up with the equivalent oestrogen of 5 birth control pills, the testosterone surge may not take place properly. This can cause his brain development to become feminised and he can develop the brain of a little baby girl.
Secondly, his reproductive organs, including his testicles, may not develop properly and in many cases are undersized. He, therefore, may not produce sufficient testosterone to obtain proper secondary male sex characteristics, size, strength, deep voice, facial hair. Plus this hormonal imbalance can lead to gender confusion.
This has been widely known in scientific circles for many years.
Always be cautious because caution is better than cure.
For women, be healthy to receive a healthy child.
