Human is the most complicated machine with simultaneous functions of the body mechanisms that keeps us well and alive. One of the wonderful processes of the human body is the function of digestion due to which sustains all other functions of the body.
But have you ever paid attention to its mechanism?
You would say that digestion starts in the stomach, but it is a fact that it starts from the mouth.
Without diverting from the topic, let us see some of the remedies of the acidity that is caused either due to improper digestion or excessive hormone (particularly hydrochloric acid) secretion in the stomach. Contrary to the popular belief, acidity can be caused due to low stomach acid too.
There are times when people have to think about eating their favourite food with the fear of acidity which is the time when there is slight irritation in an oesophagus, symptoms of this condition can be ulceration, heartburn and chest pain. There are times when increased chest pain is often considered to be similar to that of the heart attack which is more common in people who are extremely nervous and highly emotional.
You don’t have to avoid your favourite food items or think twice before having a samosa. You just need to modify your diet a bit to enjoy your delicacy.
Let us have a look at some food items having living enzymes which are found to be effective in treating acidity.
1. Aloe Vera
Aloe Vera has been one of the most popular home remedies for most of the health related problems
To resolve acidity, you can make it a practice of having 2 ounces (60 ml approx.) of Aloe Vera juice with 2 ounces of water.
2. Cloves
Due to its carminative effect, it can be very useful in avoiding acidity.
Chew two to three cloves thoroughly so that the juices are released into your system.
You might not enjoy its taste but can’t help.
Eating crushed cloves and cardamom mixed in equal amounts can also help minimise acid trouble and freshen bad breath that often relates to this problem.
3. Baking Soda
To all those of you who don’t know, baking soda is scientifically known as Sodium Bicarbonate, which is the great thing for the treatment of acidity.
Mix one spoon of baking soda in a glass of water and consume it before fizzing stops.
(Don’t enjoy the fizzing)
High blood pressure patient may take caution for this treatment.
4. Banana
Let me ask you a very simple question.
What is the main ingredient of banana?
Yes, it is water. That was just GK.
Banana is a fruit which has a pH of 5.6 making it sure shot remedy to treat acid, apart from this, acidity levels can be lowered and stomach ulcers can be treated with higher levels of potassium.
However, there is also 1% which states that the condition of acidity can be increased further by taking in banana. If you are one of them, I will not ask you to go ahead with this method.
5. Cabbage
Eat green vegetables. I know many of you are like me who don’t eat many vegetables, but it’s never late to try new thing, especially when it is beneficial for your health.
Cabbage can help in soothing the lining of stomach and mucous membranes when they are irritated, i.e. it can be helpful in the case of acidity.
It can also help in stimulating the blood flow within stomach lining further strengthening it.
6. Aniseed (Saunf)
It has potent anti-ulcer properties due to the volatile oils it contains, therefore, very helpful in case of digestion and constipation.
Boil a few seeds in water and leave overnight, drink this water during the day when you feel uneasy. I am not sure of its taste. Just try it once and then you’ll know. Chewing a few sound seeds can also help in reducing the symptoms of acidity.
It can also be helpful in case of heartburn sensation and acid reflux (burning sensation in the stomach).
7. Buttermilk
It contains lactic acid that normalises the acidity in the stomach. You can buy buttermilk or make it yourself.
Grind half to one teaspoon of fenugreek seeds (methi in India) with a little water to make a paste. Mix it in a glass of buttermilk and consume it to relieve stomach ache caused by acidity.
You can also try it with black pepper or a spoon of coriander juice.
8. Mint leaves or Pudina
Pudina or Mint leaves is known for its cooling and soothing effect which helps reduce the pain and burning associated with acid reflux and acidity.
Chop some mint leaves, add them to a pot of boiling water and drink this water after it cools.
9. Apple Cider Vinegar
One tablespoon of raw and organic apple cider vinegar along with a glass of water taken before each meal is surely going to help in treating acidity.
It is also known to calm down the stomach and help the digestive system. One of the efficient method to treat acidity when you find no other option.
10. Glutamine
These are naturally occurring amino acids in the body which are also externally available in foods like eggs, milk, spinach, parsley and fish.
Glutamine is known to help the body in increasing the resistance it can provide against suffering from inflammation. You can use it be relief from acidity.
Apart from these methods and remedies, you should also avoid causes of acidity, some of them like:
Improper food habits.
So-called dieting.
Improper timing of the meal.
Some tips to avoid acidity:
Increase Vitamin D content:
Increased consumption of Vitamin D will help in increased production of nearly 200 antimicrobial peptides which are known to cure any infections of the oesophagus or digestive system. Vitamin D can be found in foods like eggs, mushrooms, cod liver oil and fish. Don’t forget to take the sunbath.
Increased physical activity:
For proper functioning of all the organs in a body, it is necessary to set aside some time on a daily basis for exercise which will not only have a physical effect but also help in proper digestion of food. I am not telling you to follow Baba Ramdev in particular.
So you see you can always find a remedy to most of the disease right in the kitchen without investing huge amount on expensive medicines.
